A winter weather advisory is in effect until 3 p.m. on Wednesday, January 5, with 2-4 inches of snow possible for the Brainerd Lakes region.
The advisory was issued Tuesday morning by the National Weather Service and includes the entire state of Minnesota. Northern parts of Aitkin and Cass counties could see up to 4 to 6 inches of snow; while most of Aitkin, Cass, Crow Wing and Wadena counties are expected to reach between 2 and 4 inches. Areas to the south, including Mille Lacs, Morrison and Todd counties, are expected to receive 1 to 3 inches of snowfall.
Areas expected to receive the most snow include the North Coast, with 6 to 8 inches of possible snow, and northwestern Wisconsin, with 12 to 18 inches of possible snow.
Snowfall will only be part of the problem.
Wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph blowing snow, causing poor visibility and creating dangerous travel conditions, are possible until Wednesday morning, the weather service reported.
âExpect a very dangerous ride on Wednesday morning, so delay the trip if you can,â Duluth’s National Weather Service reported. “If you have to travel, take it slow and allow more time to reach your destination!” The weather service also advised motorists to keep an extra flashlight, food and water in their vehicles in case of an emergency.
After the region’s winter storm emerges, freezing temperatures and wind chills will return, the weather service reported. The Wednesday night / Thursday morning wind chill values ââappear to dip into the range of 25 degrees below zero to 35 degrees below zero, with colder weather in the west.
“These cold conditions are likely to persist throughout the coming weekend,” the weather service reported.
