Together with the NFL, the Bears announced on Wednesday that they had received Spain and the United Kingdom as International Home Market Areas (IHMA).
Thanks to the league’s new initiative, the Bears will now be allowed to engage directly with fans and sell sponsorship rights in both markets. The Bears are one of two teams that got Spain as IHMA and are one of six teams with UK rights.
“Receiving the international home marketing areas of Spain and the UK through the league is an honor,” said Bears president George H. McCaskey, who sits on the NFL international committee. “We are passionate about growing football overseas and continuing to develop the strong Chicago Bears fan base internationally.”
In 1986, the Bears beat the Dallas Cowboys 17-6 in the first American Bowl at Wembley Stadium. The Bears have played in London twice since then and continue to have one of the largest NFL fan bases in the UK.
Granting IHMA status will allow the Bears to continue to operate in the two markets that match what the organization can do in the Chicago HMA for at least five years from January 1, 2022. The team plans to create some content specifically for each market. , including dedicated social media accounts in Spanish. A main objective will also be to support and increase the participation of young people in football in the UK and Spain. By working with existing local fan clubs in both markets, the team will further develop these relationships into formal partnerships and be able to host events and appearances there in the future. Thanks to the rotation of the NFL International Games, the Bears will continue to play abroad.
